He is the author of two books:
Moral Capitalism: A Book of Essays (2024) - believing that the concept of Moral Capitalism is possible, this book of essays aims to provide readers with different viewpoints to consider and determine their own way to make a meaningful impact in the business world and society at large. Essays cover topics such as the fashion industry, farm labor, Social Entrepreneurship, labor as capital, Chat GPT, and Christian business ownership.
The opening chapter introduces the concept of Moral Capitalism and sets the stage for each of the ensuing essay contributions from various authors. It discusses the concept of capitalism, its factors of production, and how it works in the marketplace. It also explores the idea of morality and how it is difficult to legislate, with various ethical theories and systems gaining popularity in the past few decades. The introduction concludes with the idea of Moral Capitalism and how it is difficult to define due to the differences in ethical values in the Western world.
The New World of Work: People Leadership in The Digital Age (2023) - arguing that a functional
approach to Human Resource Management is fast becoming obsolete, this book
explores the many areas of accelerated change in the workplace and how business
leaders must evolve their thinking to meet the needs of their workers and
managers alike.
With
a clear focus on the accelerations caused by Covid-19 and how technological
platforms have enabled working practices and business continuity, the book
effectively lays the groundwork for a changed but well-functioning people
management system. The authors present the new model of Strategic Human Asset
Lifecycle Management that incorporates the drastic changes in how jobs are
designed, how human talent is acquired, how work is performed, how work is
rewarded and conditions set, and crucially, how labor laws must change – all to
meet the fast-moving requirements of a digitized world.
In his presentation, "People Leadership in The Age of the Self-Checkout", Bill (The Sunglasses Man) takes audience members on a nostalgic trip back to their childhood to help understand and influence their Generation and the other three Generations in the workforce today.
Based on his book, The New World of Work: People Leadership in The Digital Age, Bill will inspire all to become better People Leaders! In the age of Self-Checkout, Digitization, Chat GPT, and Automation, workers and leaders alike feel threatened. Meanwhile, business owners and top managers are finding increased productivity by investing in machines while neglecting the workers. By remembering our upbringings, attendees will take a nostalgic trip back to see what has shaped them as an employee and find a new appreciation on how to be a People Leader for each of the four generational workforces we find in the workplace today. By doubling down on the human element, we find that organizations are much more productive than automating alone. This presentation also offers traditional leadership principles along with practical advice on how to get the most out of your team.
Moral Capitalism Spotlight
Besides being
one of the editors and writers in Moral Capitalism: A Book of Essays, Professor
Garrison also contributed an essay titled "Christian Business Ownership:
Being a Moral Capitalist for God's Kingdom" and "Chat GPT on Moral
Capitalism: An Afternoon Interaction".
In the essay, "Christian Business
Ownership", Professor Garrison discusses the concept of Moral Capitalism
and how Christians as business owners have a clear path to make it happen. He
provides a framework for Christians that operate organizations that could also
be applicable to Christian leaders in the business world regardless of their
titles. He highlights the moral code of God, the character of God, and how it
can guide Christian business owners and their teams to behave. He also discusses
the traditional model of business, devoid of morality, that has led to greed
and exploitation of God’s resources to enrich the lives of the owners and their
shareholders.
In the "Chat GPT on Moral Capitalism"
essay, Professor Garrison recounts an afternoon session he spent with ChatGPT
on November 1st, 2023. The session comprises of several prompts where ChatGPT
generates responses. The first prompt is a joke about moral capitalism, the
second prompt is a Dave Chappelle-style joke about moral capitalism, and the
third prompt is an episode of The Sopranos on the topic of moral capitalism.
For The Sopranos episode, it depicts Tony Soprano exploring the concept of
moral capitalism with his wife, Carmela, and ultimately agreeing to collaborate
with a moral capitalism company to organize a charitable event. An entertaining
read for sure!
